Health and Safety

Health and Safety

It is important to create a safe and clean environment for both you and your clients in order to ensure that potential hazards are prevented.

There are many safety considerations to be considered when applying make up. Firstly, it is important to ask the client if they have any allergies, due to the fact that a range of products are used on the client and some may be disagreeable.  It is also important to analyse the condition of the skin and also whether the client has any contra-indications that may prevent the make-up from going ahead. (Broken skin, unhealed wounds etc.) It is important that a safe environment is provided for both the client and artist to work in. Cross infection must be prevented so make-up should be removed from palettes with a metal spatula and clean brushes should be used with each new client. As well as this, disposables can be used and thrown away accordingly as well using separate cotton pads for different areas of the face.

The workspace must be clean and tidy, and any wiring from heated appliances must be out of the way to prevent any hazards. All brushes and equipment must be clean and in good working order and waste should be disposed of appropriately. The area temperature must be comfortable for the client and artist and good lighting should be provided. It is important that the client is comfortable at all times in a height adjustable chair and there must be appropriate space between the artist and client. The artist must have even weight distribution and hold a good posture when working on the client in order to prevent RSI.
